The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute  (NHLBI)  at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the SMART AND CONNECTED HEALTH (SCH) PROGRAM of the National Science Foundation (NSF) are hosting a Digital Clinical Trials Workshop in Bethesda, MD, April 1-2, 2019. The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the state of the science of digital technologies and research gap areas related to clinical/behavioral/observational trials

Meeting Objectives:

  • Determine how to leverage digital technology to transform clinical trials (e.g., decreased cost, improved enrollment and retention, adherence).
  • Review sufficient and practical best practices of digital technology to enhance clinical trials, such as videos, mobile apps, text-based messaging, sensors, and other platforms.
  • Determine how to increase participant diversity and prevent digital divide.
  • Determine the low hanging fruit (what can be done now) and what are future priorities.
  • Discuss implementation strategies using digital technology in future clinical trials including workforce considerations (e.g., training on building and monitoring a clinical trial using digital technology).
